Volunteer Opportunities

No matter your talents or interests, there is a way to volunteer with Charlotte Family Housing.

Summer Camp Youth Mentor
For families experiencing housing instability, summer can be an especially challenging time. Camp RUSH provides a transformative 9-week summer experience for youth living in Charlotte Family Housing’s transitional shelters, offering no-cost access to a supportive and empowering summer program.

If interested, you must be able to commit to an in-person meeting with your mentee for 1 hour on Friday afternoons for the duration of the 9 weeks.

  • Landscaping: Assist with lawn mowing, pruning, mulching, weeding, and trash pickup. Planting and tending to flowers and pressure washing of the fence and other outdoor areas are additional outdoor opportunities.
  • Deep cleaning: Assist with general cleaning tasks in common areas of the shelter (kitchen, dining room, living room, day center). If possible, please provide your own cleaning supplies.
  • Welcome Basket collection and assembly: Collect and assemble baskets filled with fresh linen to help give families a fresh start when entering the shelter and create a welcome environment.
  • Happy Home Bucket collection and assembly: Collect and assemble buckets filled with cleaning supplies and items to help families maintain and settle when moving into housing.
  • MAP Store Collection: MAP stands for motivational achievement points, which families earn by meeting program benchmarks, milestones, and goals. The store is filled with NEW household necessities that families can shop from with their points when they transition into supportive housing.
  • Family night: Groups or individuals host pizza nights, movies and snacks, games, or craft activities for families to participate in.

These teams are made up of especially dedicated volunteers. Home Teams meet regularly and work closely with CFH staff to support our mission and the families we serve. 

Family Engagement

This Home Team allows families to make a meaningful difference together. Members of our Family Engagement Home Team are parents and young children (under 10) who volunteer side by side, fostering empathy and the value of giving back.

Throughout the year, this Home Team hosts four special events at the CFH shelter, where participating families and shelter residents build relationships and share in life’s celebrations together.

 

  • Easter Egg Hunt: Bring joy to children with a fun-filled Easter egg hunt.
  • Summer Camp Kick-Off: Help kickstart summer with exciting activities for families.
  • Back-to-School Palooza: Celebrate the start of a new school year and provide school supplies to students of all ages.
  • Fall Fest: Embrace the spirit of the season and contribute to a festive atmosphere.

Young Professionals

This Home Team is composed of young professionals interested in giving back. Members bring their diverse skills and interests together to work toward a future where everyone in Charlotte has access to safe, stable housing. Join us in creating meaningful change in our community while building valuable personal and professional connections.

We offer engaging presentations tailored for different age groups that are perfect for Sunday School classes, small groups, or corporate Lunch & Learns. These sessions can include information on who we are and what we do, plus education on housing and homelessness and engaging games or crafts for younger participants.

*** An important note about our volunteer opportunities: The safety of families in our program is always our primary concern. For that reason, ALL volunteers must complete a background check through our preferred service provider, Sterling Volunteers. There will be no exceptions to this policy. You can find more information on the background checks we require here. ***
